Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how the Colorado Access to Justice Commission (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you visit Law Help Colorado at www.lawhelpcolorado.org (the “Website”). It also explains the choices and rights available to you.
We designed the Website so that you can use it anonymously. You can read every article and use every resource without creating an account or telling us who you are. Law Help Colorado will not share or sell your personal information.
Information We Collect
We collect information only if you choose to give it to us. For example, if you:
- Contact us by email, phone, or a contact form
- Complete an optional feedback survey; or
- Report an accessibility barrier or website problem.
- Information you choose to provide may include name, email address, telephone number, and other contact details.
Law Help Colorado does not collect or store personal information unless it is voluntarily provided by consumers via email, phone, or through the contact form. Once a consumer inquiry has been resolved, Law Help Colorado will delete such information pursuant to its written data destruction policy.
Like most websites, we and our service providers automatically collect certain technical information when you visit, which may include:
- IP address and general (city-level) location inferred from it;
- Browser type, device type, operating system, and language settings;
- Pages viewed, links clicked, search terms used on the Website, referring website, and dates and times of access; and
- Cookies and similar technologies, described below.
- We do not ask for and do not want the details of your legal problem. Please do not send us confidential or sensitive information about your legal matter. We do not collect Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, biometric data, or precise geolocation.
Why Anonymity Matters Here — No Attorney-Client Relationship
Law Help Colorado provides legal information, not legal advice. Using the Website does not create an attorney-client relationship, and information you send us is not protected by the attorney-client privilege. This is another reason we encourage you not to share details of your legal situation through the Website. For advice about your specific situation, consult a licensed attorney. We will not contact you or charge you fees for accessing information.
Law Help Colorado is not a law firm, attorney, attorney referral service, or legal marketing service. Using this site does not create any attorney-client relationship and nothing herein shall be construed as an endorsement of any particular attorney.
How We Use Information
We use the information described above to:
- Operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Website;
- Understand which resources are most used so we can prioritize new content (aggregate analytics);
- Respond to your questions, feedback, and accessibility reports;
- Meet reporting obligations to funders, using only aggregate, de-identified statistics (for example, total page views). We will never disclose information identifying individual visitors;
- Detect, prevent, and respond to security incidents, fraud, and abuse; and
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your personal data for targeted advertising or profiling.
How We Share Information
We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. We share information only:
- With service providers (“processors”) that help us run the Website — such as our web development and hosting partner, analytics provider, and email provider — under contracts that limit their use of the information to providing services to us;
- To comply with law, such as in response to a valid subpoena, court order, or other legal process,
- To protect rights and safety, including enforcing our Terms of Use [link] and protecting the security of the Website; and
- With your consent, for any other purpose we describe to you at the time.
Public Transparency: Open Records and Open Meetings
The Colorado Access to Justice Commission is subject to the Colorado Open Meetings Law, C.R.S. § 24-6-401 et seq. Meetings of our board of directors are open to the public as provided by law.
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We use:
- Strictly necessary cookies, which make the Website function (for example, remembering your language selection); and
- Analytics cookies, which help us understand Website usage in aggregate. We use Google Analytics 4 with IP anonymization and advertising features disabled.
- You can control cookies through your browser settings, including blocking or deleting them. The Website will still work if you block analytics cookies.
Your Privacy Rights
Colorado residents have rights under the Colorado Privacy Act. Whether or not those rights technically apply to us, we honor the following for all visitors:
- Access: confirm whether we process your personal data and obtain a copy of it;
- Correction: correct inaccurate personal data;
- Deletion: delete personal data concerning you;
- Portability: receive your data in a portable, usable format; and
- Opt out: opt out of the sale of personal data, targeted advertising, and profiling with significant effects. (We do not engage in these practices.)
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at contact@coloradoaccesstojustice.org or 720-306-1022. We will respond within forty-five (45) days and will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request; because most visitors are anonymous to us, in some cases we may hold no data linked to you at all.
Appeals. If we decline to act on your request, you may appeal by contacting us at contact@coloradoaccesstojustice.org with the subject line “Privacy Appeal.” We will respond to your appeal within forty-five (45) days. If your appeal is denied, you may contact the Colorado Attorney General at coag.gov.
Children's Privacy
The Website is intended for a general audience and is not directed to people under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 18 has provided us with personal information, contact us at contact@coloradoaccesstojustice.org and we will delete it.
Data Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards appropriate to the nature of the data we handle, including encryption of Website traffic (HTTPS), access controls, and vendor security requirements.
Security breach notification. If a security breach affects personal information we maintain, we will notify affected individuals as required by Colorado's security breach notification law, C.R.S. § 6-1-716, and, where required, the Colorado Attorney General.
Third-Party Websites
The Website links to third-party websites, such as courts, government agencies, and legal aid organizations. Those websites have their own privacy practices, which we do not control. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of any website you visit.
Visitors From Outside Colorado
The Website is intended for Colorado residents and is operated from the United States. If you visit from elsewhere, you understand that your information will be processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those of your location.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last Reviewed” date above and, for material changes, post a notice on the Website before the change takes effect. We will not apply material changes retroactively to previously collected data without providing notice and any legally required choice.
